Personality:

Childhood deeply affects how most of us see and interact with the world, and Daja is no exception. Her upbringing among the Traders colors her perception of and interaction with the world. Though she’s a very warm and caring young woman, from a very young age she has had a poker face that is very difficult to read, and she moderates how she speaks to people she doesn’t know well quite carefully. This leads some to believe her insensitive and unfeeling, and she mentions that her past suitors told her she was cold. In reality Daja is very passionate, to the point where her emotions can overwhelm her common sense at times. She throws herself eagerly and rapidly into love when she finds it in Namorn, despite the fact that it can be used to politically manipulate her or her adopted sister Sandry, and when the relationship ends she goes to pieces for a brief time, throwing things and shouting at those close to her when they approach. So Daja’s reserved manner is certainly not due to a natural lack of feeling, but rather a taught reticence from her family – giving away everything you think and feel can put you at a disadvantage in a business deal, and the ability to drive a bargain is everything to Traders. With those she loves, Daja is friendly and playful, and enjoys teasing them quite a bit; but to those not in that circle, she can seem quiet and remote.



Daja’s Trader upbringing has also left her diligent and respectful of others and their customs. On Trader ships or caravans, everyone works hard, even children – those too young or old to handle the labor stay in the few Trader cities, where they work at different tasks, like making cloth. Thus even as a ten year old, Daja knows how to work hard and isn’t afraid of physical labor, which serves her well when she discovers her smithing magic. When she puts her mind to a task, she stays on it. At one point she, her teacher, and her fellow apprentice spend three days making spelled metal boxes to use for disease samples, barely stopping to eat or rest, until Daja just about drops from exhaustion. And when your family constantly travels to several different countries with their own customs each year, you learn to respect the customs and ideas of others whether or not you like them. Unless someone is being deliberately, incredibly rude, Daja won’t criticize or call them out without good reason, whatever her personal thoughts. She also remembers and respects her own people’s traditions, harsh though they might be. Even though those traditions got her cast out from her people after losing her family, she still considers the Traders her people and their gods her patron deities. Still, she makes offerings to the gods Frostpine follows as well, out of devotion to and respect for her teacher.



Not everything her people left her with is so positive, though. Daja may have accepted the decision to make her an outcast, but it still left her with a deep-seated fear of abandonment. Having her name later restored to Trader records did nothing to change that. When she returns from her travels with Frostpine at age sixteen and finds that she is now considered a legal adult and can no longer live at Winding Circle without taking vows, the experience shakes her deeply. She considers it to be losing her home a second time, and it hurts her to the point where she withdraws into herself even around her family. After that, she refuses to believe that Sandry can offer her a permanent home with her uncle the Duke, reasoning that when he dies they and their family will just be thrown out by his heir. In fact, that’s the main reason she gives Sandry for buying a house in Emelan rather than coming to stay with her: she wants to have a place to call home that can’t be taken from her. This isn’t to say she has a fear of separation, or else she never would have traveled with only her teacher for company for a few years, but she can’t bear the idea of never being welcomed by the places and people she considers “home” again.



Between her reserved manner with those outside her circle and her need to hang on to those inside it, it’s hardly surprising that Daja is also loyal to a fault. Even when she fights with Sandry after her bitter homecoming, for instance, she still tells her she’s welcome to make Daja’s home her own if need be. Sometimes her loyalty can also bring her grief. When her admiration of Bennat Ladradun’s daring in fighting fires leads her to befriend and help him, she closes herself off to believing that he’s an arsonist, even though she knows something about him is off. She makes him a precious set of gloves from her rare living metal to help him, and refuses to believe that he’s been setting fires until she has incontrovertible proof. However, Daja is also loyal to her sense of right and wrong, and so she doesn’t hesitate to hunt Bennat down and bring him to justice for his betrayal and crimes. Still, in the end, she gives him the mercy of a quick death rather than watch him burn slowly at his execution pyre. That’s the kind of girl she is – she looks out for people, particularly her own, even if it’s not always an easy thing.

Abilities: Daja can melt, manipulate and reshape all kinds of metal, though obviously the bigger the project, the more difficulty she’ll have and the more energy she’ll expend. She can also burn any kind of substance used for fuel, such as oil, wood, coal, paper or cloth. Sometimes she may set easily burnable items on fire by accident, if she’s in direct contact with them. She can also draw heat to herself or other items or people – not enough to burn, simply enough to warm the air. However, she can’t create a fire out of nothing, nor can she control fire – pyromancy is not part of her skills, even if she can use heat. Also, as might be obvious, she can’t be hurt by fire or heat. She’s also limited by being tied to her possession state, since if she doesn’t fuel her forge-body, its fire goes out and she weakens significantly.

Description: Daja’s skin is now far blacker than it ever was in her human form, covered in a shade like coal. Her tight braids are long and ash-gray, most of them tied back away from her face and decorated with tiny metal beads and ornaments. The inside of her chest glows a molten red that shows through cracks radiating outward from it, seemingly just under her skin; the shade and brightness depends on the strength of her forge form’s fire. Her eyes are a dark red, and her fingertips are tinted like cooled steel.

Reasoning: After the loss of her family, Daja’s smith-magic becomes her life. When asked to give up the circle of her new family - which shaped and strengthened that magic - along with the craft of smithing itself in order to return to her people, she refuses. “Maybe I could give up our circle, or I could give up smithing, but not both,” she says. With her intense devotion to her craft, there’s hardly anyone better to take a place essential to crafting metalwork in her new household.
